Met Costume Institute Gala 2011 - Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty Part 1

This year's Met Costume Gala paid tribute to the late designer Alexander McQueen. Some of McQueen's most iconic pieces were on display at the Metropolitan Museum of the Arts during the event, which was the site of McQueen's first graduate show.

The Met Costume Gala is a chance for attendees to dress-up, with guests favouring more daring couture looks than what is usually seen on the red carpet.

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

In a tribute to her mentor, Sarah Burton looked ethereal in a white, long-sleeved Alexander McQueen gown.

Gisele Bündchen paid tribute to the late Alexander McQueen, wearing a stunning red McQueen gown with had a simple fitted bodice which followed out into a sea of red layers. Accompanied by husband Tom Brady, Bündchen opted for natural make up and wavy hair.

Not one to pick traditional fashion choices, Chloë Sevigny chose to let her gown do the talking, wearing minimal make-up and no jewellery with her high-collared black lace McQueen gown.

Karen Elson also chose a McQueen gown, teaming her sequined dress with soft curls.

Alexander McQueen fan Sarah Jessica Parker remembered her designer friend in a high-necked, full-beaded McQueen gown, accessorised with green square-toe heels.

RED

Lea Michele chose to team her stunning Escada dress with a floral clutch and sleek hair.

Mary-Kate Olsen stayed true to her eclectic style wearing a vintage Givenchy haute couture gown and Nicholas Kirkwood heels.

Generally favouring girly dresses, Dianna Agron stepped out of her comfort zone in this bright column Michael Kors dress, accessorised with a gold cuff.

BLACK

Natalia Vodianova walked the red carpet with designer Valentino in one of his feather and sequin couture gowns.

Rihanna's adventurous approach to fashion saw her wear a black, one-shouldered, lace Stella MacCartney lace gown with a long, red braid and emerald drop earrings.

One of many Stella McCartney dresses on the red carpet, Maggie Gyllenhaal stood out in a stunning blue sequinned gown. She completed her look with minimal make-up and a simple up-do.

Her blue Tory Burch gown suited Isla Fisher’s wavy red curls. Fisher teamed her sequined skirt and organza bodice with a soft smoky eye.

YELLOW

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley looked amazing in a daring pink Burberry Prorsum gown. The thigh-high split and cut-outs emphasised her fantastic body.

Isabel Lucas looked lovely in a coral, Grecian Louis Vuitton halter dress. Lucas compliments her gown with an intricate headpiece.

SUMMARY

Other than Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney was the most popular designer on the red carpet. There were a lot of nude gowns with detailed embellishments. Guests tended to favour natural make-up with minimal jewellery.

It was hard to pick a favourite among all the stunning outfits. I couldn't separate Eva Mendes, Ginnifer Goodwin (loving both of their vibrant jewelled tones) and Taylor Swift (I loved the dark red lips with her intricate J. Medel dress).

  1. Gisele in the red gown is stunning. And I always love a dress in lemon

  2. Giselle's couture McQueen gown exudes passion. Red is a colour that soars above others. Miranda Kerr was quite a disappointment this year with the swan lake like dress. Her shoes were poorly chosen and too much of an emphasis! Ashley Greene looked lovely in her fairytale gown. As for Isabel Lucas, always true to her bohemian style of life, her coral dress was tasteful and suited her perfectly. Xo

  3. Thanks for taking the time to comment:) I love hearing people's opinion on fashion:)

The layers on the train of Giselle's McQueen dress is amazing! She definitely has the presence to pull it off.
I agree with your comment on Miranda Jess. I don't think the length of the dress is right for the style. I think Isabel really accessorised her gown well. She turned what could have been a basic look, into something special.
